Before the superlative achievements of Fernando ALonso, and in the wake of his glory years, Spain has provaided Formula 1 with a rich store of racing heritage. Defined by triumph, tragedy and tales of what might have been - Spain's "other" drivers encapsulate the bittersweet pursuit of grand prix glory.

Flying the flag

Spain's first Grand Prix took place on a street curcuit in the Pedralbes district of Barcelona. Flying the flag for the home nation was Barcelonan Francisco Godia Sales, better known as Paco Godia. A wealthy businessman and motor racing enthusiast, Godia finished in 10th, some 10 laps down on the rest of the field after numerous incidents that finally resulted in the Spaniard hurling the bonnet of his damaged car into the pit lane and carrying on to the finisz line. The Barcelona native wasn't done with GF1 however, and after a second SPanish GP in 1954, he put together more commited F1 racing programmes between 1956 - 1958, claiming a best result of fourth at the 1956 Italian and German GP's.

The glamour of racing

Fencer, aviator, Olympic bobsleigh competitor, steeplechase jockey and racing driver, Alfonso de Portago might now have been Spain's first F1 star but de Portago was certainly the most glamorous. The son of a spanish nobleman, de Portago was a gentleman driver who focused largely on sports cars. In 1956, however, Enzo Ferrari named him as a fifth driver in F1 team that also featured Juan Manuel Fangio, Peter Collins, Luigi Musso and Eugenio Castelotti. The company was exalted but de Portago hel his own, taking the best result of a shared second at the 1956 British GP after handling his car over to Collins. In 1957 a return to sportcar racing ended in tragedy when he suffered a tyre failure while contesting Edmund Nelson and 10 spectators - five of tchem children - we killed, bringing the legendary road race to an end.

The lean years

Spanish F1 hopes thinned in the 1960s and 1970s with few drivers making an impact on the sport. However ,a numer of hopefuls flirted with F1 careers longer funds allowed. Once such driver was Alex Soler-Roig, the son of a wealthy Barcelona surgeon. After some success in sportcars, Soler-Roig made his F1 weekend debut at the 1970 SPanish Grand Prix, driving a Lotus 49. He failed to qualify, did not start at Belgian Grand Prix, and again failed to qualify in France in the same year. Undeterred, he took sizeable  resources in March 1971 but again the results were poor and after two further starts in 1972 he bowed out of the sport.

Team players

After a dearth of Spanish heroes to cheer in 1970, the following decade saw a new wave of hopefuls break through, two of whom woud enjoy a career on the pit wall as well as at the wheel. Emerging from F3000 in the late 1980s, Adrian Campos and Luis Perez-Sala both graduated to F1 with the lowli Minardi team. Campos was first, making his debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix in 1987, though he was disqualified for passing cars on the parade lap. Perez-Sala joined the Italian squad the following year, displacing Campos. While both only raced briefly in F1, they eventually transferred their Motorsport knowledge to the pit wall, with Campos presiding over a successful team in GP2 and now in Formula 2 and the new F3 championship. Perez-Sala, meanwhile, acted as Team Principal at the short-lived HRT F1 team in 2012.

Podiums and points

With the arrival of Marc Gene and Pedro de la Rosa in 1999, spanish hopes were rekindled and both enjoyed long and successful careers at the variety of teams. While Gene raced 36 Times and took a best result of fifth with Williams at the 2003 Italian Grand Prix, it was de la Rosa who made the greater impact. The Barcelona native became just the third spanish driver to feature at the F1 podium after de Portago in 1956 and Alonso in 2003. De la Rosa'a moment arrived in Hungery in 2006, where he navigated rivers of rain to take second place for McLaren behind Jenson Button. In all, de la Rosa raced 104 Times for Arrows, Jaguar, McLaren, Sauber and HRT across a 13-year career, making him still Spain's second most regular Grand Prix started after Fernando Alonso.

The youngest gun

Before Carlos Sainz's arrival at Red Bull-owned Toro Rosso, another spanish Red Bull Junior hopeful had been touted as a potencial star of the future - Jaime Alguersuari. WIth a British F3 title in his pocket and a solid season in Formula Renault 3.5 in 2009, Alguersuari was boosted to an F1 seat with Toro Rosso at the year's ungarian Grand Prix, in place of Sebastien Bourdais. The step up made Alguersuari the youngest ever driver to start a Grand Prix at the age of 19, 125 days. It was the record that stood until 2015 and an arrival of another Red Bull hopeful, Max Verstappen. In all, Alguersuari raced 46 Times before exiting the sport at the end of 2011 and has since forged a successful career as a musician and DJ.
