The car used the same chassis as a sport version - light but rigid. Unfortunately that disabled constructors from using standard doors. For that reason constructors decided to use doors that open upwards.. that gave a new nickname to a 300 SL... Gullwing :) The steering wheel tilts to enable a driver an easy way out of the car. Gullwing's interior is very sporty, yet...luxurious. The designer who had this great ability to combine sport with luxury was Friedrich Geiger. The project of a car became famous for follolwing words: "The look of 300 SL gives an impression of running 100 miles an hour while standing still".. The body of a road-version of Gullwing was made from steel. Aluminium was only engine cover, trunk and door. For sport drive lovers there was a special version made entirely from aluminium though! Well.. I think that perhaps surprising was a front window - made from plexiglass.. That commercial, yet sport version was only produced in the numer of 29...

What was a characteristic of a Gullwing? A phenomenal adherence. Yet, the most important part of this beauty was an engine. In previous models W194 and W196 a 3-liter engine was installed. Later on, thanks to Bosch who used an aircraft engine construction for a direct fuel injection, the power of the engine was doubled to 212 KM, later up to 222 KM. A high engine power, 4-speed gearbox and aerodynamic body of 300 SL made a Gullwing very sucessfull. 300 SL was reaching 100 km/hr in 8,7 seconds and a maximum speed was up to 260 km/hr!
A disadvantage of a car, which was overheating, did not discourage clients from a purchase of Gullwing. Within 3 years Mercedes sold 1400 cars (1100 in USA). In 1957 a production of a coupee version was finished. His successor was a new roadster version.
